Built on Learning Strategy, Made for Compliance

I dictated this blog into my phone on a dog walk. When I read the transcription back, it lacked structure and punctuation. The words were all there, but they didn’t make sense. Communication doesn’t happen simply with words.

Comms is not enough

In an organisation, comms get sent, learning events happen, managers talk, but people still don’t understand. It’s a real source of friction, and I’m sure we all recognise it and question why our learning doesn’t land.

In recent months on this blog we’ve been talking about changing the conversation on compliance training. In many minds, compliance training is an endurance test to get through once a year, not a learning experience that keeps people safe, legal, ethical and healthy at work daily. The annual elearning module is a perfect example of the friction: comms happen, yet nobody understands why the organisation has compliance in the first place. It’s ‘just’ a tick box, rather than a need for people to care about compliance.

Stop the friction

Our CARE Compliance process prevents that friction, for all the reasons we’ve covered in previous blogs, not least the judiciary’s new expectations on behaviour and ethical standards. Being conscious and consistent in changing the conversation requires clear comms, learning campaigns, and direction from leadership. Communication and caring about compliance isn’t haphazard, it comes from quality thinking and the resulting strategy.

The roots of our consultancy are supporting clients to develop effective learning strategy. Learning Uncut, now powered by Kairos Modern Learning, has helped many organisations build a learning strategy through our flagship learning strategy process called Strategy Builder, because we know effective learning doesn’t start in a classroom, whether in person or online, it starts in a boardroom. Without a strategy, how do people know what progress looks like, and how does L&D demonstrate behaviour change? A strategy gives you a baseline, so you can show auditors, risk and governance teams, legal, and the judiciary that compliance training has moved the dial on better behaviour around all learning, not least compliance.

Strategy is the Firm Foundation

Learning strategy also points towards an effective learning culture. When compliance training is embedded in that culture, compliance happens every day, keeping people safe, legal, ethical and healthy at work. Who doesn’t want that for their organisation?

Caring for compliance and changing the conversation about it starts with your strategy, to the point where it becomes culture. You will therefore not be surprised to learn that CARE Compliance shares its roots with Strategy Builder, the process we’ve proven time and again with organisations across the public and private sector. CARE Compliance is built specifically for compliance with a shorter time commitment, a speedier culture shift, with an equally impressive result. Let’s look at how CARE Compliance and Strategy Builder share the same DNA.

CARE Compliance is born from Strategy Builder

CARE is Curiosity, Advice, Rebuild, Embed. Strategy Builder is Diagnose, Strategise, Implement, Sustain

Step 1 is Curiosity / Diagnose. For any strategy, we need to start with where you are. The phase of curiosity, which leads to diagnosis, is one of the most important parts, yet often L&D jumps straight to solutions and skips this entirely. Please don’t. This step seeks to understand your context, what’s going on outside your organisation as well as inside, plus what you have now that you need to move away from, enhance, or keep. We look at what you have now through every available lens, establish your context, and determine what needs to happen next.

Step 2 is Advice / Strategise. Then we set out what you could do and give you options. It’s a critical phase, because it’s hard to see the wood for the trees from inside your own organisation. Bringing fresh eyes from outside means genuinely independent advice on what your culture actually looks like. We hold up the mirror and kindly help you see the gaps to create your critical path.

Step 3 is Rebuild / Implement. This is where we work together on how to change your learning offer for better results. It is not always necessary to rebuild everything or shift in all areas, so we can evolve from where you are. Alternatively, it may be best to have a revolution and start again. Either way, we use our tried and tested 3Rs + Reflection approach to learning design, which results in more effective, efficient, engaging and enjoyable learning experiences that are more impactful and actually meet the legal requirements for compliance (because tick-box training doesn’t). Implementing your strategy may look like chopping your elearning into bite-sized pieces, blending it across resources, or partnering with our Associates to create a brand new learning experience suited to your shifted context.

Step 4 is Embed / Sustain. And finally, we support you to keep your new learning approach alive. This is a step so many L&Ders forget as they move onto the next project. Yet it’s the stage that ensures your organisation values your work as the evaluation of your learning offer becomes fully effective. This brings to fruition the success measures established in the first steps. A planned embedding of learning shift means sustaining your strategy for the future, with no slipping back to ineffective, old, outdated ways. Without changes to the learning experience in the wider organisational context, there’s no learning culture, no improved compliance understanding or adherence. This step is what secures the lasting behaviour change that satisfies risk, compliance, legal, and the judiciary.

Strong roots, standalone strength

CARE Compliance gives you a clear, well-trodden pathway to better compliance. When you care about compliance, so does everyone else in your organisation, and compliance becomes one of the firm foundations of a genuine learning culture. When people care about compliance and about each other, they care about learning too.

CARE Compliance reviews your compliance training using the same strategy discipline as Strategy Builder, already proven with organisations across the public and private sector, at a time when the judiciary’s expectations on behaviour and ethical standards keep rising. It shares Strategy Builder’s roots but stands on its own: quicker, sharper, and built specifically for compliance. Whether you need a full learning strategy or a focused compliance review, that’s the work we do with you. Compliance training, like induction, technical and leadership training, needs to sit within a strategy so you know, not guess, that it’s working.
